From Judgment to Lightness
What does it really mean to judge someone? Why do we carry that energy—and what happens when we finally choose to let it go?
These questions took center stage during the most recent episode of the Mystic Airheads Podcast, a playful yet thoughtful show I co-host with my father-in-law, Andre. Each week, we pull a tarot card and use it to spark conversation. This week’s card was Judgment—a powerful archetype often illustrated by people rising from graves under the call of an angel’s trumpet. Resurrection, reckoning, reflection. Big stuff.
As we explored the meaning of Judgment, we found ourselves wondering: why are we judgmental? What are we actually holding onto?
The Root of Judgment Is Attachment
In the podcast, I shared my theory that attachment is the root of judgment.
Attachment to being “better than” others can make us judge those who live differently or have less.
Attachment to hard work or material success can cause us to look down on those who move through the world more slowly or with fewer resources.
Even on the yoga mat, attachment to the "perfect pose" can make us judge our own bodies—our wobbles, our flexibility, our strength.
So I led Andre through a simple but powerful visualization:
Recall the feeling of judging someone.
Then, recall how it feels to be judged.
Now imagine that the person you were judging feels the same way you do when you're being judged.
Sit with that.
Then, thank both of those emotions—yes, thank them—for the lessons they’ve taught.
And finally, let them go.
Andre sat with it for a moment... and then told me he felt lighter.
Yoga as a Practice of Letting Go
This week in my yoga classes, we’re exploring that same theme—releasing attachment.
In yoga, letting go means more than relaxing your muscles. It means releasing the mental stories, expectations, and judgments we carry about what we should be doing or how things should feel.
Let go of the belief that a pose must look a certain way.
Let go of the pressure to “perform.”
Let go of the idea that you are limited by your past, your body, or your fears.
This week, we’re playing with kakasana, or crow pose—an arm balance that looks like flight. But the real secret?
The only way to float is to let go of the idea that gravity controls you.
Only then can you discover how light you truly are.
